A Successful Kickball Finale

Last week was our NYC Social Sports Club Kickball finale. While the overall season results were a bit disappointing (see re: Winning Run Goes Through Basketball Hoop 40ft Away from Kicker), we did finish out the season with a bang, bringing home a win in our very last game. Everyone who showed up played spectacularly. For a star-by-star breakdown, check out the details after the break.

By Batting Order:

“The Hitch”: Jeremy gets my vote as Kickball MVP for the season. Time after time he’s got on base when it’s eluded the rest of the team. He pulled it off again last night, at one point turning our friendly game of kickball into a bout of dodgeball by literally pirouetting into first base to avoid a ball beamed at his undying-heart-filled chest. The Hitch also made the most caught outs for us last night, disappointing kickers throughout their lineup who had thought “Oh yah, that foul ball is definitely going to mak… crap.”

“Mr. INeverSignedUpForFacebookButAmAlreadyOnGoogle+”: Takis showed up big again in his second game, consistently getting on base with extra base kicks to the outfield, and running in on defense to catch kicks both short and long (including on the game-ending double play).

“The Queen of Queens”:  Jess showed up at the Lower East Side field, bringing herself and a beleaguered Seth Whitton, fresh off of getting destroyed at Crossfit. Our highest percentage kicker then proceeded to transpose that destruction onto our haplessly humbled opponents. She would have had a perfect night from the plate had it not been for a bit of a balance deficiency due to being on her second workout of the night (and also awesomazing).

“That loud guy”: I managed to put up our first out-of-the-park kick last night, tapping it over the outfield fence onto Delancey Street. I also was able to knock down a laser kick blasted in the vicinity of my noggin, turning a near-death experience into a near double play.

“The Texas Kickball Massacre”: Best offensive performer of the night, without a doubt – Seth drove in more RBIs than anyone else on the team. He cleared the bases in the first inning, putting up as many runs with one kick as the other team was able to eek out all night. Mr. Whitton (which I’ve heard you can call him “if you’re nasty”) also legged out a solo home run, proving that no Crossfit workout was going to prevent him from leading our team to victory.

“Do you believe in Mericles?”: Due to a massive amount of guilt caused by a notable baserunning error in the last unsuccessful campaign to earn our first victory, Katie took it upon herself to own the basepaths at Manhattan Charter School. The most alert runner all night, Mericle was tagging up, taking extra bases, and capitalizing on every defensive shortcoming offered up by our opponents. Also of note was her creativity as in the fourth inning she did her best Steve Nash impression, attempting to take a charge on the (second) baseline in the midst of a tag-out.

Adam Picitelli (the man is far too professional for a nickname): Adam’s kicks were finding gaps last night that had, in previous matches, avoided the well-intentioned-blasts rocketed off of his toe. Anyone who knows him understands that Adam is the picture of consistency, and he was undoubtedly been our most consistent outfielder throughout the season. He kept it up last night making tough catches in center field seem absolutely routine.

“The Bruiser from Baltimore”: Daniel put the ball into the outfield with every kick he took. He blazed through bases, outwitting the other teams attempts to gun him down, and snagged balls out of the left field sky all evening.

“That is “Ms. The Pitcher” to You!”: Abbey has been the heart and soul of our team all year, our unquestioned leader. A smart kicker, consistently good for a single every time she visits the plate, Miss Wisconsin has also steered us right as our pitcher throughout the season. She came up big again last night, even contributing to the defensive effort with a nifty catch of her own.

(Kickball Kasualty): Geoff, you and your knee are always with us in our hearts.

We want to give a special thanks NYC SSC for putting on such a friendly and open league – We look forward to playing with you again.
